Resilience, Strength and Connection: How Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Has Helped Mum Jess

May 12, 2024 · Jeanella Lim

For Mother's Day, we wanted to shine the spotlight on Mum Jessica (right) and how she found empowerment, community, and personal growth in jiu-jitsu during the most challenging part of her life.

We at Tigress are so fortunate to have the opportunity to share Jess's story to mums who are perhaps considering jiu-jitsu by highlighting the transformative impact it has had on her life.

Jess states, "I think walking into the gym that first time a couple years ago truly changed the whole trajectory of my life. I had just become a single mum, and had lost so much of myself in the years before. It’s crazy to look back and see how much I’ve flourished in so many facets of my life since that time. I’ve learnt how resilient and strong I am, and I’m no longer concerned about what my body looks like, only what it can do".

When Jess started her jiu-jitsu journey, she claims, "the first few months were HARD. It’s confronting coming into a male-dominated space, but I quickly realised those men were entirely in my corner, and they all wanted to see me be great. It’s a solo sport in many aspects but there’s no doubt we’re a team".

Today, Jess highlights the profound impact of overcoming fear and embracing bravery in her new sport, as she shares, "the sisterhood in jiu-jitsu is really something special too—there are friendships I’ve made on the mats, with women I would have never crossed paths with otherwise, that I’m positive will last an entire lifetime".

We are so grateful to Jess for allowing us to share her story! We hope that Jess's story has resonated with you, perhaps as you consider jiu-jitsu, by highlighting the transformative impact of self-discovery, resilience, and support it has had on her life.
